I have seen multiple different designs that require that to be removed. Your "shower arm" will unscrew lefty loosy, a small pipe wrench will be perfect, although it will damage the pipe, so I don't recommend it on your new one to tighten it. Usually with a fair amount of TFE paste with teflon on the threads will keep it from leaking after only hand tightening, I usually use both teflon tape and paste.
