Beer Prices Increased
The government yesterday revealed a plan to raise the minimum prices of alcohol in supermarkets and pubs in an attempt to end binge drinking. Under the new scheme, cans of lager, ale and beer will be priced at 30 pence and a one litre bottle of vodka will come in at £10.70. The new laws are a step in the right direction, but with beer coming at a 38p minimum, the measures are unlikely to deter hardened drinkers from the amber nectar.
It has long been regarded as an issue that supermarkets are selling alcohol at a an extremely cheap rate. The effects of this are far reaching, and one sector who are not happy are pubs, they are already struggling to make a profit but the new measures mean they could fall even further behind supermarkets in the price war. Much like buying a car cannot compete on price with hire purchase cars.
The more pressing issue however is that young people are doing long term damage to their health, making themselves more susceptible to conditions like liver and kidney disease, as well obesity when they reach middle age. While it is clear that supermarkets do make impressive efforts to prevent under age drinkers from purchasing alcohol, they have found ways around this and still manage to get hold of it. in any case it isn't just under age people that are harmed by binge drinking contract purchase cars are also putting others at risk.
Of course the counter argument is that this new pricing is not fair on the majority of us that treat alcohol responsibly; why should we all suffer because of an unruly few? This issue has particular gravitas in the environment of recession and spending cuts, should the masses really be denied a simple pleasure? lease purchase car, at the weekend that they have? The government should stop for a second and think just who it is penalising with these new laws.
